Weeks Doesn't Expect To Remain With Brewers

Oct 1, 2014 5:36 PM

Rickie Weeks, who has spent nearly 10 years with the club, doesn't expect the Milwaukee Brewers to pick up his $11.5 million option for 2015.

Weeks didn't make a final appearance for Milwaukee on Sunday, the team's final game of the season.

"It's just one of those things where what's done is done," Weeks said. "We had a good conversation earlier this morning with (GM) Doug (Melvin). I told the manager if the time permitted itself during the game to put me out there, OK. If not, so be it.

"Life still goes on. It's not like this is the end of all (things). I'm the type of person that I move on. That's the way it is. I don't think I'm going to be here next year. It's just for me to go out there and move forward with my life."

Burnett Seems Likely To Retire, Forgo $12.75M Option

Oct 31, 2014 4:27 PM

A.J. Burnett has a $12.75 million player option in his contract for next season, but it seems likely that he'll retire instead.

"Maybe this is a hint at which way Burnett is leaning: He kept four game balls from Saturday night's start, the 404th of his career," writes Jim Salisbury. "Would he have done that if he planned to pitch next season?"

Burnett went 8-18 with a 4.59 ERA, 1.409 WHIP and 190 strikeouts in 213.2 innings this season.

Yankees Lack Pieces To Execute Immediate Rebuild

Oct 14, 2014 8:46 PM

The New York Yankees have missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons, but executing a quick rebuild is almost impossible.

Teams generally rebuild by trading older, expensive players and capitalizing on high draft picks. The Yankees don't have high picks coming and the older players they have are extremely expensive.

"Who exactly could the Yankees trade? Alex Rodriguez, CC Sabathia and Mark Teixeira have bloated contracts, deep injury histories and declining performance (not to mention blanket no-trade clauses and no desire to leave). The Yanks are stuck with them," writes Joel Sherman.

Spending money, perhaps on Max Scherzer and/or Victor Martinez, is another option, but not a smart one with neither considered young at this point.

Hughes 'Would Love To Stay' With Twins Long Term

Dec 11, 2014 8:51 AM

Phil Hughes would love to stay with the Minnesota Twins over the long-term.

If the Twins approached him about a long-term extension, he would certainly listen.

"I've felt really comfortable here," Hughes said. "It's certainly a place I would love to stay if they would have me. I don't know if that's something we'll get into this offseason. If it is, I certainly wouldn't be against it."

Two years and $16 million remain on the contract the 28-year-old signed last offseason.

Padres Likely To Shuffle Offense

Oct 31, 2014 9:19 PM

The San Diego Padres appear to have a stable pitching staff, but the offense may be shuffled this offseason.

"If you look back a year ago, and you look at our roster, it looked pretty steady at what was going to happen the following spring," Bud Black said, before listing this season's originally projected starters, position by position.

"We were pretty set, and I think that's definitely changed this year. I don't know whether uncertain is the word. But I do think there will be some roster construction more so than last year."

Jedd Gyorko, Will Venable and Everth Cabrera have struggled after solid efforts in 2013.

"We had a lot of guys that had down years," Black said. "Can you bounce back? Of course. Are they going to? I don't have the crystal ball."

Source: Willingham Plans To Retire After Season

Nov 4, 2014 5:52 AM

Josh Willingham insists that he hasn't made a decision on his future, but a source says he'll retire after the season.

The veteran outfielder has told people close to him that he is "100 percent retiring" once this season ends.

Willingham, one of just three players in Minnesota Twins history to hit at least 35 home runs in a season, disputed that version in a text message.

"I haven't made a decision yet and don't know what I'm going to do," Willingham wrote.

Hughes Turns Down Chance For $500K

Sep 26, 2014 6:59 PM

Phil Hughes has turned down a chance to pitch again this weekend, even though one more out would have earned him a $500,000 bonus.

The Minnesota Twins right-hander would earn a half-million-dollar bonus if he reaches 210 innings this year.

Hughes is set to finish with 209 2/3 after a rain delay forced him out of his final scheduled start Wednesday.

"I just didn't think it was right," Hughes said. "If I were fighting for a playoff spot, I'd 100 percent be available. But given the circumstances, I don't think it's the right thing to do."

Hughes is 16-10 with a 3.52 ERA in his first season with Minnesota.

Pirates Willing To Stretch Payroll To Retain Martin

Sep 29, 2014 10:28 AM

The Pittsburgh Pirates have a philosophy of not allocating more than 18 percent of their payroll to one player, but may rethink the strategy with Russell Martin headed to free agency.

Neal Huntington said the Pirates are prepared to "stretch beyond our normal comfort zone" in order to retain the catcher.

Martin is enjoying a career-year, having entered Wednesday's game hitting .294/.405/.437.

He is one of just four Major League players with at least 400 plate appearances and an OBP above .400, joining Jose Bautista, Victor Martinez and Andrew McCutchen.

Hughes Falls One Out Shy Of $500K Bonus

Sep 25, 2014 1:49 PM

Phil Hughes pitched eight innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night in a game that was delayed 66 minutes because of rain.

That rain likely cost Hughes $500,000.

In his final start of the season, Hughes fell one-third of an inning short of triggering a $500,000 innings bonus in his contract with the Minnesota Twins. He has thrown 209 2/3 innings this season. His contract stipulates that he would receive the bonus if he reaches 210 innings pitched.

Ron Gardenhire said that he will not use Hughes out of the bullpen this weekend.

"I was very aware of it, but some things aren't meant to be," Hughes said.
